We cordially invite all the members of the academic fraternity to the second Prof. M. C. Valsakumar Memorial Lecture organized by Academy of Physics Teachers (APT), Kerala. The memorial lecture will be presented at 10 am on 19th December 2020 by Dr. Debendranath Sahoo, Honorary Professor, Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning, Puttaparthy. The title of the lecture is “Heisenberg’s Invention of Quantum Mechanics”. The lecture will be presented online through Google Meet and it will be live-streamed in the YouTube channel of APT.

Prof. M. C. Valsakumar was born at Pinarayi, Kannur district in Kerala. He was an alumnus Govt. Brennen College, Thalassery and later physics dept. of Calicut University. Soon after his M.Sc. (1975- with gold medal) he joined the prestigious BARC Training School of DAE, Govt. of India. Since then he worked at IGCAR, Kalpakkam till he superannuated as Outstanding Scientist and Head of Materials Physics Division, IGCAR in 2012. Apart from various internal projects which he took up and completed successfully, Prof. Valsakumar was a versatile researcher. He published more than 160 research articles in reputed international journals (including many in PRL and PRB). Some of his seminal works on open quantum systems and statistical mechanics became landmarks in those subjects.

His research interests spanned from quantum field theory to computational materials science. He had worked with the great Indian physicist Prof. E.C.G. Sudarshan while the latter had been at IMSc, Chennai. Many scientists and various university students completed their PhD under his able guidance. He was also an expert in high performance computing and was instrumental in developing dedicated computational facilities at IGCAR. Soon after he retired from IGCAR he was invited as a Distinguished Prof. at School of Materials

Engineering/Science, University of Hyderabad. He was at HCU for two years. In June 2015 he accepted the invitation to be a faculty of IIT Palakkad where he served until March 2018. Prof. Valsakumar was an inspiring teacher with a deep understanding of different branches of physics and mathematics. He was adored by his students who fondly called him Valsa. He was an honorary member of Academy of Physics Teachers, Kerala. His demise is a great loss to the physics community.

Once again, a warm welcome to the programme.

Dr. Titus K Mathew, President, APT

Dr. Harikrishnan G, Secretary, APT
